ALFAsim 2025.2 Release: Breaking Barriers with a More Robust Solver for Multiphase Flow

At ESSS O&G, we’ve always had a clear mission for ALFAsim: deliver reliable, high-fidelity 1D multiphase flow simulation for the Oil & Gas industry. Over the past years, ALFAsim has grown into a powerful tool, but like any technology evolving in real-world applications, we knew there were solver limitations that needed to be addressed.

We’re thrilled to introduce ALFAsim 2025.2, which now includes improvements on the steady state solver, emulsion viscosity model, plugin support and charts style. With this new release, we focused on eliminating some key restrictions and strengthening the foundation of ALFAsim for the future.

One of the major highlights of this release is the steady state solver, we’ve included support for pumps, ensuring more accurate and comprehensive modeling of scenarios. On top of that, we introduced a new initialization method using tables for initial conditions, giving engineers greater flexibility and control when setting up their simulations.

Another key enhancement is the emulsion viscosity modeling for three-phase flow, improving how emulsion is represented in multiphase systems. ALFAsim now provides more options for complex interactions between oil, water, and gas. A new hydrodynamic model has been introduced, where users can force water to be fully dispersed in oil when using the Three-Phase Water Dispersed in Oil hydrodynamic model.

The new release of ALFAsim also brings important improvements to the way users interact with plugins. The user interface has been updated to handle multiple plugin versions, making it easier to manage different workflows and maintain compatibility across projects. In addition, users can now clearly track the status of each plugin based on its activation, ensuring greater transparency and control during simulation setup.

Improvements:

  • A new friction factor model has been added to alfacase, expanding the flexibility and accuracy of flow modeling across different scenarios.
  • The plotting interface now includes snapshot, export, and reset plot icons at both local and global analysis. Additionally, a new option to convert units on the x-axis in global plots gives users greater control over how results are displayed.
  • ALFAsim now supports Read-Only History Data, ensuring the integrity of imported information. Users can also change domain units when adding observed curves, increasing flexibility and consistency during history matching workflows.
  • Job names have been standardized, improving clarity and uniformity across different simulation runs.
  • As part of the ongoing UX improvements, the equipment menu has been enhanced, offering a more streamlined experience.
  • A comprehensive review of equipment properties accepted on the controller equipment, ensures accuracy and consistency.
  • To further improve usability, the property name Particle Size has been updated to Droplet Size, aligning terminology with industry standards.
